Are You Growing Your Network Vertically or Horizontally?

Author Scott York - [2 Mar 2009]

This is a rant…

There are a lot of self professed “gurus” in the business of fitness.

These “gurus” encourage you to grow your network, go out meet new people, shake hands, pass out business cards, etc. in order to get new customers for your fitness business.

Been there, done that.

In most cases, this is more of a “what’s in it for me?” ego type of futile exercise.

Once again, been there, done that.

What I would ask these “gurus” is how are YOU growing YOUR network?

Vertically or horizontally or, god forbid, downward?

It’s no secret that my mentor and friend is Joe Vitale.

www.mrfire.com

He’s been on many TV shows and in a couple of hit movies.

He’ s written many books.

But what WE do that separates US from what others do is that we aim higher.

Joe just posted a blog about having lunch with the author of the best seller “The Four Agreements”.

The book was featured on “Oprah” recently.

Heard of her?

Joe rubs elbows with James Caan, drives Steve Reeves car, hangs out with Donny Deutsch, gets letters from Jenny Mcarthy, and  a bunch of other high profile Hollywood types and business mega success stories.

Joe is ALWAYS aiming higher.

I hang out and interact with Monica Brant, Lee Priest, Adela Garcia, Joe Vitale, Robert Rodriguez’s wife, Steve Blechman ($330 million dollar twin lab former owner) and many other movers and shakers who have set their sites higher.

I am always aiming higher.

The point.

Go vertical.

Don’t move up a rung or 2 above the normal crowd and be satisfied.

Move 10 rungs.

And then get a taller ladder.

You CAN be successful with just a computer and an internet connection.

It’s how I came to meet Joe Vitale.

It’s how I came to work with Lee Priest and introduced myself to Monica Brant.

Now I’m Monica’s business manager.

It’s how Joe knocked off “Harry Potter” from the number 1 spot with his book “The Attractor Factor”.

If we can do it, so can you.

Perhaps you should polish your emails, press releases or get to know your audience before just sending out communications.

Maybe that’s why it’s not working.

To me “pounding the pavement” is a major hassle and a major waste of time, energy and gas.

Besides, how will you go vertical by “pounding the pavement”?

How will you knock of “Harry Potter” and buy a $375,000 Rolls Royce by pounding the pavement?

Just ranting…
